START with one daily win to get healthy

The HSE, key funders of parkrun Ireland, will be promoting the START campaign at St Anne’s parkrun this Saturday 26 May.

There will be fun and games galore with giveaway t-shirts and frisbees for children who participate in our quizzes. The START campaign is a partnership campaign between the HSE, safefood and Healthy Ireland that aims to help parents set their families on the path to a healthier future. It recognises the realities of daily parenting, how difficult it can be to change habits or create new ones, and how external factors can make that more challenging.

The START campaign encourages parents to get started and build momentum by achieving one daily win. This daily win could be adding more vegetables to dinner time, swapping sugary drinks for water or having fruit as an after school or work snack. It encourages parents and guardians to make a start at building healthy habits and provides plenty of helpful tips on how to:

  • Limit foods that are high in fat, salt and sugar for example chocolate, sweets, crisps, takeaways
  • Give water and milk at meal times and during the day
  • Give appropriate child-size portions of food
  • Increase vegetables, salad and fruit
  • Increase physical activity
  • Reduce screen-time
  • Increase sleep time
