As parkrun has grown, it’s not surprising that the number of incidents where a runner falls ill or gets injured during an event has also increased. There’s almost 10 million run performances now each year across the globe and additionally, as parkrun continues to broaden its reach out to those people who have previously been less active, it’s statistically certain that the number of these incidents will also rise.
Given this, one thing that parkrun has been conscious of in recent years is to try to ensure that all runners fill in – and keep updated – their ‘ICE’ (‘In Case of Emergency’) information. So if an accident occurs, then the emergency services and the event team have a point of contact to let them know what is happening and potentially obtain important information about that individual.
Filling in your ICE details is a bit like buying insurance – it’s not something that you maybe want to think about too much and generally will never be used, but it’s so important and valuable for that one time when it’s needed.
Don’t forget that you can also buy a parkrun wristband which has your ICE information already printed on it, making it even easier to access. And you can keep this wristband on whenever you’re out for a run, meaning that these contact details will always be instantly available if ever they’re needed.
Since 2014 this data has been captured at the point of registration, but it’s obviously important to ensure that it’s also kept up to date. You can log in to your parkrun profile to update your ICE at any time.
