parkrun is booming in the ACT and Gungahlin parkrun has been offering a unique one lap experience since 2013.
The one lap takes in a few different views – around a small lake, across bridges, fords and alongside a dam wall. Fast, scenic, almost flat and a joy to run. It’s almost as though the lake was designed for parkrun!
Event Director, Andrew Gardner was a distance runner in the ACT for many years before parkrun. He wanted to be involved with a less competitive, community-based run and parkrun was the perfect solution. Andrew says he loves parkrun “because it is truly inclusive and I love to see dogs get to run too”. Andrew has also been inspired by the progress regulars have achieved since joining parkrun, “I am constantly surprised to see runners who started with us as walkers, going on to do serious runs like 1/2 marathons and even marathons. We never expect our runners to move on to events like these, but it’s always inspiring when we see they do”.
In Winter, it is regularly run in sub-zero temperatures. Great for photos but can prove a challenge some mornings.
Recently, our official photographer Will Barlow set up a “jump-spot” and recorded runners as they passed and jumped. The resulting video captured the joy so well. Keep in mind it was below zero and only about 50m from the finish line. Video can be seen here.
Post-event, parkrunners can usually be found at Frankies at Forde. Great coffee and fast service. It’s is very popular with parkrunners and locals alike.
You may have noticed the parkrun website looks a bit different today. We had hoped to have a brand new website live by now but unfortunately, due to complications in delivery, we haven’t been able to achieve what we wanted. We haven’t changed any of the content or the structure of the site….
The Canning River Regional Park covers both sides of the Canning River, Perth’s second main river, which joins the Swan River Estuary through its South-Eastern suburbs.
