Jo and Brett Cowley recently celebrated their 100th and 50th milestones at Mount Barker parkrun. Jo wrote the following ‘week in the life of a parkrunner’ to capture the moment…
Sitting on the bus, remembering the fun from Saturday’s parkrun…
starting to giggle a little…
then starting to talk to myself a little…
person sitting next to me moves seats…
On the bus again,
but having an in-depth conversation with myself, scratching my head trying to work out how the parkrun token is connected to my barcode – there are no wires!!
Wednesday – Funday!
Have a jog around the hood, and see the parkrun chalk still on the paths… feeling happy
Thursday – only 2 sleeps to go!
Check out Mount Barker parkrun on Facebook for anyone with milestones this weekend.
Read their stories and like, love or laugh.
Race home from work and lay out my gear ready for the morning… I’ve got my heart rate monitor, my GPS, my playlist, my gels, my hydration pack, my headphones, my sunnies, my high tech socks, my Apple Watch, my sweatbands, my glow in the dark runners, my lucky rabbit foot and…
Early to bed to read “I Just Felt Like Running” by Forest Gump
“Hallelujah!!! The day has dawned!!! Jump out of bed!
All ready… jump in the car… oops forgot my water… jump in the car… oops forgot my sunnies… jump in the car… oops… naah all good and let’s go!
Meet up with our Sarah, everyone starts arriving, look for our crew… say hi to everyone and get a sneaky photo taken.
The Run Director gives the briefing and I have a giggle when I remember all their funny antics…
Lining up… the suspense is killing me… the parkrun dogs are going crazy… waiting, waiting, waiting… index finger ready on my Strava… waiting……..GO!!
And we’re off… peace sign to the photographer… and run down the slope.
Weave through the runners, dodge the dogs pooping (don’t breathe in!) Ha!
Run, Run, Run…
Hey Brett… wait for me!!!
Bop along to my music…
Try and drag off that kid who just passed me, then… here they are coming back… the first runners go past in a flash… say hi and wave to my parkrun buddies, high five any kids who put their hands out…
Run, Run, Run….
Brett waits for me so he can do his signature “rabbit ears” move for the photo… and I make out I don’t know he’s doing it – ha!
Run, Run, Run… gasping… stomach in and a big smile for the photographer…
Last stretch up the slope…
That does not get any easier… and finish… collapse on the grass… gasping!!
Best feeling ever!!
Scan my barcode… (double check there are no wires)
Say a big thank you to the volunteers… have a chat with other parkrunners and make a new friend…. then off for coffee and cake…
Ping! Results are in!
Ping! photos are up!
Scan through them all and like, love or laugh
Sunday… bounce out of bed and off to another running adventure… and there we all are again, my parkrun buddies.
It just doesn’t get any better than that!
Thank you parkrun, and all the Mount Barker RunDirectors and crew, volunteers and parkrunners for the perfect weekend, for your friendships and for showing me that anything is possible!
As Freddy sings….
“Don’t stop me now!”

It was only fitting to welcome our newest partner into the parkrun Australia family on a perfectly sunny Sydney morning last Saturday. We are thrilled to have Blackmores join us to ensure that we continue to provide free weekly events around the country. Interim Managing Director, Blackmores Australia and New Zealand, Eric Jeanmaire, joined…
When parkrun arrived in Australia in 2011, there was initially only a handful of people instrumental in its weekly success and John Borbidge was one of them. The Ballarat stalwart turned Gold Coast local said the infancy of parkrun gave him just what he was looking for at the right time in his life….
