With Valentine’s Day nearly upon us, this week for the #parkrunresolution we’re asking you to be kind to yourself and others.
This is a great opportunity to give ourselves some self-care.
It’s so easy to say, but often so hard to do.
We can feel bombarded with messages which tell us what we should look like, how we should speak, what we should wear and what latest gadget we should own. We can also feel encouraged to use comparisons with others as a measure of our own self worth, and sometimes we can question who we are, what really matters to us and what we like or dislike about ourselves.
When we talk to ourselves it’s often easy to be critical and much harder to be kind: but being kind is one of the most important foundations to long lasting health and happiness.
As 2021 dawned, many of you might have set targets to move a little bit more, get more fresh air, or make a few swaps to try to consume a little more real, whole food.
Of course, these are all great ways of boosting your physical and mental health, but being kind to yourself is about so much more than this.
It means accepting the rough and the smooth, the times when things go well and when things might not work out, that it’s OK to feel nervous or scared, not berating ourselves for what we are not, or what we haven’t got, but celebrating who we are and what we have.
Self-care is, above all, remembering that we are utterly unique and that each and every one of us is special.
Through the gift of daily self care – whether that be compassionate thoughts, nurturing actions or uplifting behaviours – you give yourself a powerful dose of positivity that no pill, miracle superfood or magic diet could ever provide.
So as we reach the end of week six on our #parkrunresolution journey, we’d like to encourage you all to think about the things you love about yourselves, the traits that make you special and what you have achieved, during The parkrun Resolution journey and beyond.
Try to describe yourself using only kind, positive words – write them down if you want to – and also take the opportunity to spread a little bit of that love to those around you too.
Tell someone you care, compliment them in a meaningful way. Be genuine and encouraging and make them realise that they matter to you.
Here’s to having and sharing a little bit of love on Valentine’s Day, and every day!
