parkrun profile: Horseshoe Bay Reserve

Nestled away in a picturesque corner of the mid-north NSW coast, Horseshoe Bay Reserve parkrun has everything you need: a beautiful course, a campground on the doorstep of the start area, an abundance of post-parkrun coffee options, but most of all, a fantastic community spirit.

Situated 43 kilometres south of Urunga parkrun and 62 kilometres north of Port Macquarie parkrun, Horseshoe Bay Reserve parkrun offers an idyllic seaside escape for both locals and tourists alike.

The event consists of two laps – one long and one short – and is fairly flat with a few hills in places. The event starts and finishes near the surf club and overlooks the main beach boulders at South West Rocks. It is an interesting course along the beach front, beside Saltwater Creek and through bush areas.

Co-Event Director, Faye, has been involved with the event since the beginning when the team were searching for community funding to get the event up and running. Faye’s partner at the time had a life-changing injury that meant he was unable to exercise, so she got involved with parkrun to help him find a sense of purpose through volunteering. Faye then went on to become the Co-Event Director in December of 2020. “I love our event because it’s so community oriented. Our core group of volunteers and regular walkers and runners have created our own little welcoming family,” she said.

Many like to cool off after the event with a swim at the beach or the neighbouring ‘Saltwater Creek’, where you can also go kayaking for up to 3km. For parkrun tourists, there is a camping ground conveniently located next to the start area.

Faye is proud of the community the team has built. “If you’re looking for a small and friendly parkrun, we are one to try. The volunteers will make you feel welcome, plus you have all the beautiful beaches and activities in South West Rocks to explore while you’re here.”

The team are spoilt for choice when it comes to their post-parkrun cafe but tend to frequent the Heritage Beachside Cafe the most, which is known amongst locals for its amazing coffee and breakfast to suit all.

“We have so many stories of people who have benefitted from our parkrun. We have volunteers who gained a new sense of purpose, walkers and runners who are battling cancer, young kids who have improved their times in order to succeed in school competitions, and volunteers who have helped out more than 100 times!! parkrun has brought our community together and many of our participants have benefitted health-wise as well as making social connections that they didn’t have before parkrun existed.”

Faye and the team at Horseshoe Bay Reserve always go out of their way to make everyone feel at home and love to welcome tourists to their event each week!

Lois Rowland was a parkrun volunteer for more than ten years before eventually deciding to have a go at the 5k, following an ectopic pregnancy.   Having now completed 50 parkruns, she tells us her story.   My husband is a keen parkrunner and has been taking…
