New parkrun alert: Sunnidale- Barrie

Another parkrun is launching in Canada! On June 29 we welcome Sunnidale- Barrie to the parkrun family.

Soo Owens is the driving force behind bringing parkrun to Barrie. As an avid runner and multisport athlete, Soo has competed at the national and international levels. She is extremely enthusiastic about not only the training value of a regular, timed 5K offered to all classes of athletes but also the community benefits. parkrun promotes local outdoor activity, volunteerism and accessibility to all.

As a member of the local triathlon and running clubs, Soo believes that Barrie is more than ready to host a parkrun. For years, she has been following the parkrun phenomenon from its humble beginnings in the UK. With the growth of more events in Canada, she felt the active community in Barrie would benefit from such an initiative.

The Sunnidale parkrun team also shares the same enthusiasm. Laurie Hunt, Stephanie Davis, Rebecca Hyde and Don and Anne Eddie have been enthusiastic contributors to the parkrun initiative, each bringing their experiences and support to make this site a success.

“We are proud of the venue of this parkrun and we are sure that participants (local and tourists) will enjoy Sunnidale Park. It’s a picturesque green space that offers something for everyone, including a portion of the TransCanada Trail, children’s playground, off-leash dog park, and many additional trails for all season use. Floral features include an arboretum and special interest displays, such as Nut Grove, Xeriscape, and Butterfly Gardens.”
