Staying connected can be one of the most important motivators on any journey, it’s vital for our mental and physical health.
We’re into week 5 of the #parkrunresolution and we encourage you to keep connecting.
We know that the power of parkrun lies not just in helping people to become more physically active, but in creating rich and meaningful relationships between individuals and communities so that they feel supported and connected. In fact it is these very connections which can help encourage people to be more active, and to sustain that lifestyle change over months, years and decades.
Connection, whether that is with ourselves, with others or our environment, is vital for our mental as well as our physical health.
As we get close to the end of week five of The parkrun Resolution journey, we would love to encourage you to think about your own ways of connecting, and take a few steps to make those links even stronger.
Connect with yourself – allow yourself the time to breathe fully and deeply, and be present in the moment. If you are walking or running, maybe you can think about your body position and your posture; tune into your body and feel all the sensations that come with the movements you make.
Connect with others – reach out and check in on someone this week, whether that is at a parkrun event, via email, over social media, or a phone call. Maybe you could ask about their day, and really listen to the answer. You might also want to update someone on the changes you have made as part of The parkrun Resolution. This could be a family member, a work colleague or someone in your local shop.
Every contact counts, and every interaction can be meaningful and help lift our spirits and that of others.
If you are unable to talk to anyone else, maybe you could focus instead on reading some of our incredible stories and feeling supported in the knowledge that people you may not even know are with you on this journey.
Connect with your environment – many people have told us that they have enjoyed being able to experience the world at a slower pace and taking in their surroundings a little bit more. Maybe you could try to spend some time outdoors this week and really take notice of the world around you, from the flowers, to the grass or even the sound of the wind. You’ll be amazed at how stopping, even for a few seconds, can calm our minds and make us feel a bit more rooted.
