People of parkrun brought to you by Vhi

Clonmel parkrun in partnership with Vhi

Name: Mary Gavigan

Age:  52

Occupation: Self employed

Local parkrun: Clonmel

Number of parkruns completed: 6

How did you get involved in parkrun?

I had done some locally when holidaying in local areas e.g. Wexford/Galway– starting as an unregistered participant and then registering.

What do you love about parkrun?

I love the interaction with the locals and love the fact that there is no competition. We have done these as families away for the weekend. We have such fun competing amongst ourselves and meeting everyone. Always being made to feel welcome in the local communities. It’s fantastic to see young and old taking part alongside each other.

Who do you participate with?

Family, husband and friends

Any parkrun milestones / achievements you would like to share?

My sub 30 results.  Then my sub 29, then 28.  Next one Sub 27.

How has parkrun impacted positively on your family outside of 9:30am on a Saturday?

It gets everyone up and out early exercising on a Saturday morning – which is great.

Do you have a health or fitness goal?

Not really as we exercise a lot anyhow but generally to keep up the exercise and get involved in the local events.

Who is your dream parkrun running buddy?

My husband

What was your best parkrun experience?

Well I suppose I’d have to say Clonmel as its great to see the local event starting – but loved

Tramore also. The venue by the sea was fabulous and indeed sometimes “fresh”!

What was the funniest parkrun moment?

Being lapped by a 14-year-old! My goodness he was fast – was first home at that event!

What advice would you give to someone who’s never been to parkrun?

Try it – run, walk or crawl. You will always be made welcome!

parkrun is for everyone no matter what age! We personally do a lot of local events – we love the charity ones specifically.  There can be such competition at some of these events – but with parkrun it’s all about you and the community – that’s why the concept is great.
