The Vhi parkrun Hero award for the month of August has been awarded to Sharon Ashmore from Royal Canal parkrun.
The monthly award recognises and rewards inspirational, hardworking, and dedicated members of the parkrun community who embody the ethos of parkrun or have made an outstanding contribution – be they participants or volunteers.
As part of the ‘Vhi More Than Running’ campaign, Vhi are calling on people to try out volunteering at their local parkrun, not only for the benefit of participants but for their own health and wellbeing too. It’s only fitting that the latest parkrun Hero is an incredibly dedicated parkrun volunteer with over 300 volunteer credits.
Sharon has been involved with parkrun since it arrived in Malahide, where she immediately fell in love with it. She got involved with volunteering in Malahide accidentally at first but it would lead to a great journey of volunteerism at parkrun. She couldn’t believe her luck when she heard that an event might be coming to Griffeen in Lucan, which was much closer to home. She quickly got involved with assisting the route set up and was delighted to become part of the core team there.
Having served on the team for a few years, Sharon thought she might like to try her hand at setting up a new parkrun event and so marked the start of Castletown parkrun in 2015, running through the beautiful grounds of Castletown House and Gardens. Sharon has since retired from the position of event director but continues to get her parkruns in at various locations around Kildare and Dublin, and worldwide when she gets the chance, but she’s happiest when she’s volunteering. With 315 parkruns and 306 volunteer credits to her name, it’s easy to see what parkrun means to Sharon.
