It was fantastic to see more than 70,000 people participate at 672 parkrun events around the world last weekend. Amongst these we were delighted to see 146 junior parkrun events in action in England, and the first junior event to resume in Wales. Before the end of this month, another 40 junior 2k events are set to restart.
All of these events, from Russia to Australia and from Japan to Jersey, are being delivered in accordance with our COVID-19 Framework. It is reassuring to see the adapted operational processes working so well, and that these modifications have not adversely affected the wonderful parkrun experience we’ve all come to love and expect.
In further encouraging news, we expect to be able to announce dates for the return of junior events in Scotland and Northern Ireland later this week. We continue to work with a wide range of stakeholders across all home nations to determine when our 5k events can resume. On this, specifically, we don’t have the clarity we need just yet, but we hope that upcoming announcements will provide us with the information we need to be able to confirm intended restart dates.
Meanwhile we continue to gather permissions from landowners across England in readiness for the return of 5k events. We are working towards a deadline of 21 May to make a decision on whether events will be able to return on 5 June.
Elsewhere we are still on track to resume a number of events in the USA on 22 May. And we are optimistic that we will be able to restart some events in South Africa on 29 May.
Throughout the pandemic we have endeavoured to provide a weekly update giving as much information as we are able to share on the situation across the parkrun world. From one week to the next, there is often no significant update on a number of territories. But we have not forgotten about anyone, we continue to analyse the situation everywhere, and we remain committed to doing everything we can to return parkrun in every community just as soon as we are allowed to do so.
Thanks for your continued support.
