A special day!

Every parkrun is special, providing an opportunity for everybody – walkers, joggers, runners, and volunteers to be together and create an inclusive, unique, and positive community. But some parkruns are even more special when they are held on a significant date!

parkrun has always been about community and bringing together people from all walks of life, and at this time of year, we all have an opportunity to offer a hand of friendship to someone who might really benefit from coming along to parkrun.

Since the very beginning of parkrun, local events have had the option to put on additional events. Each year there are two days where event teams may choose to hold a parkrun on another day.

Tag Der Deutschen Einheit (German Unity Day) which falls on 3 October has been chosen to be one of the two special days at parkrun in Germany (the other one is the New Year).

German Unity Day is a national holiday commemorating the reunification, which occurred in 1990, when the former GDR (East Germany) joined the Federal Republic of Germany after being separate countries for 45 years. The fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989, paved the way towards this national big day. Since then, every year the third of October is the official date that the country celebrates Germany being united once again.

For parkrun events in Germany it is a great opportunity to join the celebration of one of the most important moments in German history and enjoy the spirit of one nation. For us it is a great opportunity to invite local residents to start celebrating the day in an active way, being one community.

The first special events celebrating the German Unity Day were held on 3 October 2019 where 13 parkrun locations decided to organise their special events. Almost 1000 people joined parkrun on the day with over 300 attending parkrun for the very first time. It was a truly special day for everyone, who took part in the Unity Day parkrun!

In 2020 all parkrun events were closed and we had no opportunity to celebrate German Unity Day at parkrun but since the return of parkrun in Germany in July this year, the plan is to organise a number of additional parkrun events on Sunday 3 October and enjoy this special day together again.

Ten years of parkrun Poland

The first parkrun in Poland took place on 15 October 2011.   As the country celebrates its ten year parkrun anniversary, we take a look back at some special moments.   When back in the autumn of 2011, five participants arrived at the very first Polish location: parkrun Gdynia, no one was able to predict…
