I always say that the number one thing I miss about the UK is parkrun (barring friends and family of course!). But it’s true – for several years before I moved to the Netherlands in 2017, parkrun was a big part of my life. I did my first one in July 2014 and immediately loved it. Everyone was so friendly and all ages and abilities were there. I never felt out of place, and over time I found that parkrun was not only good for keeping fit, but contributed to maintaining my mental health too.

Countless friends have joined me one morning out of curiosity and then gone on to become regular parkrunners themselves. Somehow I convinced my dad to join me for a run that fell on Boxing Day (Second Christmas Day) four years ago, and now he’s done more parkruns than me! My aunt and cousin regularly parkrun, and even my grandma has done it a few times. It’s now a tradition in our family to run a parkrun on Christmas morning.

What really made a difference was meeting my boyfriend at – you guessed it – parkrun. Before we moved to the Netherlands, almost every Saturday would be spent touring the different parkrun events in Yorkshire. If you had told me a few years ago that I would be getting up early on a Saturday to visit different Yorkshire towns to do a 5k run, I would have said you were mad. But it’s addictive! While I loved to explore new places in the area, the atmosphere was always the same – everyone is welcoming and encouraging, and they particularly love to see people who are new to parkrun.

Now, we have this amazing opportunity to contribute to parkrun in the Netherlands. We’re both so excited to bring something that we love to a country that we love. It’s a fantastic way to give back to something that has given us so much. We can’t wait to get started!
