We’re delighted to announce details of another parkrun that we hope to launch during 2019, Växjö parkrun!
We’ve long felt that Växjö would be a wonderful place for a parkrun, bringing the first parkrun event to Småland, and the fact that the beautiful Växjösjön at the centre of the town is almost exactly 5km in length, with a running route right around the lake.
The popular Växjö Marathon already uses this route for their event.
But what could help to move Växjö parkrun from a dream to a reality? Here comes into the story Claes Mittjas, the CEO of Medley and also a keen parkrunner at Haga parkrun, having run there 36 times.
It just so happens that right alongside Växjösjön is Medley’s swimming pool and training centre, an ideal location for the start and finish of the parkrun and of course a location for the all-important fika after each event.
“I love the concept of parkrun, it’s just such a special relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and a great start to the weekend” says Claes. “And because you don’t have a pick up a number before you run, everyone can just along to the start when they want, a few minutes before 9.30. That means that the whole thing is really time efficient too. I love to go there to try and better my time each week, but I like the fact that it attracts a really wide spread of abilities and it is genuinely for everyone, whatever age or speed”.
“parkrun’s motto of a ‘healthier and happier planet’ really ties in well with Medley’s motto of ‘Training that makes you happy’(‘Träning som ger dig glad’) so if we can help to be a part of getting parkrun up and running in Växjö, that would be great”
Positively the kommun are really in favour of bringing parkrun to Växjö, and so the green light for the course has already been given. Now we are on the lookout for people to get involved so we can start building a team of people to get parkrun started in the town. parkrun is always organised by a team of volunteers, so you won’t be alone, and you’ll get support and guidance from parkrun every step of the way.
Come and be a part of Växjö parkrun, and join a global parkrun family of over 1600 events and 5.5 million registered runners, joggers, walkers and volunteers!
We have set up a Facebook page so you can register your interest in Växjö parkrun and we will also be having an information meeting for all those who want to know more on 12th March at the Medley training centre. We look forward to seeing you then, and we most look forward to Växjö parkrun starting up soon in 2019!
This Saturday, it’s 10 years since the first event in Denmark was held at Amager Fælled in May 2009. We share a few words with the man behind the launch of parkrun Denmark (the first parkrun territory outside of the UK), Jonathan Sydenham, and look back at the photos from the first event (thanks…
We want to highlight some of our fantastic volunteers from our events across the Nordics, so we are starting a little series of features where we want to give some thanks and love to our volunteer heroes from our parkruns. If you’re volunteer and want to say a little bit about parkrun, or if you…
