We’re delighted to welcome yet another member to the parkrun family in the Nordics – Damhusengen in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The event will kick off on September 11th in the outskirts of Copenhagen at the last stop on the city’s metro line i Vanløse. We hope to attract a lot of runners from the municipalities of greater Copenhagen as they will have a shorter travel to Vanløse.
The course is two laps around a peaceful meadow called Damhusengen. It’s already a popular site for running and walking. The start and finish is near a coffee and ice cream kiosk which is well-known by locals.
The idea to bring parkrun to Vanløse comes from Julie Nehammer who started running parkruns in 2019 with her children, then aged 9 and 12.
“At lunch a great colleague of mine, Anna Suhr Trzecieski, told me about parkrun and how she ran with her children and husband. I saw parkrun as a great opportunity to have a shared hobby with my children. At first, the early Saturday morning runs were indeed driven by the enthusiasm of a couple of parents who liked the health benefits of regular runs, but the children soon got engaged in improving their lap times and even invited their friends to join.”
“In the beginning of 2021 I met Søren, who has always been a runner and has participated in several iron mans. In a brief moment of insanity I suggested we should run a marathon in 10 laps with breaks in between. Søren didn’t hesitate for a second and we had paved the path for a beautiful partnership in the name of running. Søren and I are now both run directors of Damhusengen parkrun.”
Søren continues “In the planning phase so much help has been offered from the Parkrun volunteers around Copenhagen. Gert Nissen has been great at keeping up the energy throughout covid lockdown where we couldn’t open a new parkrun. Rikke Nissen has directed events with us as volunteers in order to train us for the upcoming responsibility. Karsten Jensen and Johan Thornberg were kind enough to patiently explain the inner works of the parkrun IT systems. And Anders Staffe has supplied us with great ideas on how to handle the equipment.”
Registration for Damhusengen parkrun is already open and our first event is on September 11th.
