On September 11th, 2021, Pokkinen parkrun became the northernmost parkrun in the world. Another record was also made that day, when the oldest registered parkrunner in Finland crossed the finish line. Martta Sergejeff, 90 years old, participated in the event at the urging of her daughter. She participated by wheelchair, although she also manages short distances with a walker. Martta was joined at the event with her daughter and grandson. What follows is her experience that day:
“The event is simply wonderful. I haven’t been to Oulu in ages and it was nice to see the beautiful park and riverfront. First, I was concerned that there was no point in it, that younger people should be pushing me around – an awful long distance of 5km. But, it went very well after all, when there were more helpers. And it was quite fun and exciting, when my son in law accelerated me to high speeds. It was wonderful to see all the young people, who were running so amazingly fast.
People were very friendly. I enjoyed talking with Sylvester, a volunteer from OUlu, at the cafe. He was a proper gentleman and could talk nicely with an older lady such as myself. This seems to be one of the important things in parkrun: that people can come to chat and meet each other.
I hope that people can see from these pictures that really anyone can come and join parkrun. For many older people it would be really good to get out and meet people. It was wonderful that even at this age, I could still take part. I have never participated in any running or walking events, and I’ve gotten my exercise mainly from my daily chores. When I was little, my school trip was 6 km, which I went by foot. Even to the train station, we walked 18 km each way. Nowadays, my steps aren’t quite as swift as they used to be, but it’s all still good, since I can manage living by myself.
Even though the event was wonderful, I doubt that I will join this Fall or Winter too often. Instead, I look forward to Spring, that I could again get to view the park in full bloom.”
