All change for parkrun ‘Special Days’ in the Nordics!

NY double cover 1

parkrun always takes place on a Saturday morning – apart from two days a year when events have the possibility to hold an extra, special event. In every country around the world, New Year’s Day is one of these days, and then each country can choose an extra day of their own.

In the Nordics, the special days have been 24 December for Norway and Finland, 25 December in Denmark and 6 June in Sweden. Whilst the Swedish special day has become a very popular event in the parkrun calendar, no Norwegian or Finnish events have actually held an event on their special day, and in Denmark, only one event, Amager Fælled, has traditionally held an event on December 25.

So we have decided to change the ‘special days’ for Norway, Finland and Denmark, so that hopefully more events will want to host an event on these days, and we will be able to spread some additional parkrun joy in the brighter, warmer months. The Swedish special day will remain as June 6.

The new days are the following:

  • Norway – 1st May (Arbetsmarknadsdagen (Labour Day))
  • Denmark – 5th June (Grundlovsdag (Constitution Day))
  • Finland – Variable (Helatorstai (Ascension Day) – 18th May in 2023

The changes are being put in place straight away, so this means that there will be no extra parkrun on Dec 25 in the Nordics this year.

All Nordic events will have the possibility to have a parkrun on their applicable special day, at the usual time of 9.00 (Denmark) or 9.30 (Sweden, Norway & Finland). Note that it’s optional for events to have a parkrun, and events will decide closer to the time whether they will have an extra event that day. Approximately two months before each special day, we will publish a list of which events are planning to have an extra parkrun on that day.

We look forward to welcoming many parkrunners, from home and abroad, to our special days in 2023 and beyond!
