Top five reasons to walk at parkrun

lead story

Whether you’re finding your feet, not sure how to get started, craving some me time or are keen to introduce someone new to parkrun, here are five reasons why we love walking at parkrun to get you ready for #parkwalk!

Catch-up with friends

We know that life is expensive right now, so why not save some money and meet your friends at parkrun rather than the pub or cafe? Spend an hour walking and talking, you could even bring a hot drink from home to enjoy on the way round! You’ll feel great after – we promise!

Enjoy some ‘me time’ in a safe space

Walking at parkrun is a safe space for you to switch off from the outside world. Why not switch on a podcast or your favourite album and spend an hour or so walking in the fresh air, safe in the knowledge that marshals will guide you safely around the 5k route.

Fun for all the family

Every week walking at parkrun is an opportunity to spend some free, quality time with the family. If you’re struggling to get the little ones motivated, why not suggest a treasure hunt along the route? Encourage them to keep count of the number of marshals, who can collect the most leaves along the route or spot the most birds.

Supporting someone to complete their first parkrun

There is nothing quite like the feeling of helping somebody else to take their first step to a more active lifestyle, or to encourage someone to achieve their own goals. Why not encourage your parents, grandparents, neighbours or colleagues to walk with you at parkrun and show them how much fun they can have!

See your local area in a new way

If you’re used to running at parkrun, walking the route gives you the chance to see the location in a different light. Perhaps you’d never noticed that field of cows before, or that beautiful view in the distance.

Plus, why not bring your dog along? Many of our events welcome dogs on a short, non-extendable handheld lead. You could even take on the tail walker role, after all, you’ve got the tail! Please check local event details to check if your event is suitable for dogs.

We can’t wait to welcome you at a parkrun event. You can find your nearest event here.

You’re always welcome at parkrun

Going to parkrun was non-negotiable for Tess, but over time she fell out of love and “felt like a burden”.   After hearing about the parkwalk initiative she returned to parkrun, feeling welcome and accepted within the community.   I got involved relatively early on with parkrun. I’m not going to lie, I’m a bit…

parkrun is my safe space

Izzy has anxiety and often finds going out and about on her own scary and difficult. She has been a parkrunner since 2014 and finds her local parkrun community offers her a safe space where she feels comfortable and not judged.   My first parkrun was in 2014. My mum had been a few times and…
