parkrun celebrates its one millionth UK participant

one million

From humble beginnings in 2004, with 13 runners and a handful of volunteers, parkrun has developed into the UK’s largest provider of free physical activity. Such has been our success that last weekend we saw the one millionth unique parkrunner complete one of our 491 UK events – numbers which are growing every weekend.

To mark this milestone, parkrunners across the UK are being invited to share images and stories this weekend of what parkrun means to them, using the hashtag #1MillionStories

Chief Operating Officer, Tom Williams, said: “This is a really exciting moment in the life of the parkrun movement. I’m sure when Paul Sinton-Hewitt founded parkrun with a few mates in Bushy Park he never could have dreamed that one million different people would cross a parkrun UK finishing line within 12 years.

“Even more significant is the fact that 126,058 individuals have given their time as parkrun volunteers across the country to make that happen. This achievement would not have been possible without the unbelievable desire of local people to contribute to their communities. Thank you to every single person who has volunteered at parkrun.”

parkrun Founder, Paul Sinton-Hewitt CBE, said: “The next 10 years is going to see the real impact that parkrun has delivered, changing not just the fitness, but the health of our nation. Over the past 12 years we’ve seen so many people come out of their homes, engage with their communities and improve their physical and mental wellbeing in ways we never could have imagined.”
