You may be surprised to see endurance runner Susie Chan, who has finished in the top 10 women at the legendary Marathon des Sables and completed many other ultra-marathons, down at her local parkrun. But as we all know, parkrun means many things to many people and that is the beauty of it.
Here at Intersport we were delighted to catch up with Susie and find out why some Saturdays her parkrun is a speed challenge, and why other weeks it’s just about being there and soaking up the sense of community.
“I love parkrun for many reasons,” says Susie. “That 5K around a park can be run several ways. As part of my integral training, I have run parkrun as fast as I can to try and make myself a better runner, checking my progress throughout the year.
“Other times, and perhaps much more enjoyably, I’ve run parkrun with friends, met friends there, or incorporated it into a longer run. The best bit about parkrun is that you are always amongst friends. Even if you don’t know their names, it’s one big supportive running family, encouraging you no matter what pace you want to do it – on your own, with your family, with friends, running, walking, or challenging yourself. There’s a brilliant sense of community and support.”
