A prospect takeover

Brookfields 3

In October, Prospect parkrun had a volunteer takeover from local specialist school Brookfields.

Assistant Head, Maurice George, talks to us about the difference parkrun can make to people with additional needs.

Brookfields is a local authority maintained Special School located in Reading, Berkshire for pupils aged between three and 19, catering for students with a wide range of learning disabilities and additional needs.

I feel that parkrun and Brookfields share the same ethos and values of social inclusivity, participation and promotion of positive wellbeing.

So it seemed obvious to me to see if Brookfields could run a ‘takeover’ event at Prospect parkrun.

We are always looking to give our students opportunities to volunteer and to encourage them to participate in physical activity outside of school.

It’s important to make students and families aware of free inclusive community activities available in the local area, and help sustain participation after they leave Brookfields.

Brookfields wanted to do something fun with the wider Reading community.

parkrun can have such a positive impact on people with a learning difficulty or additional needs. The Prospect parkrun team could not have been more welcoming. We loved cheering everyone on.

I’m told there were some great stats from the day with 139 people taking part, 12 of whom were on their first ever parkrun, and six of those were under 18.

Despite the pouring rain and awful conditions, nine new personal bests were recorded.

There were 27 volunteers from Brookfields and the Prospect parkrun team sent us a huge thank you on Facebook afterwards, sharing photos from the event and praising our ‘delicious’ selection of cakes!
