Delivering the ‘Dementia Moonshot’


Finding a cure for dementia has often been likened to putting a man on the moon. As with NASA’s Apollo program in the 1960s, dementia research has an achievable goal, but we need a huge, combined effort to get there.


As part of their election manifesto, the Conservative party pledged to launch a ‘Dementia Moonshot’, doubling research funding to £160million and speeding up trials for new treatments.


This has given renewed hope to people affected by dementia. Now we need to see action to deliver on those commitments.


That’s why Alzheimer’s Research UK has put together a spending plan, identifying the most ambitious and promising research avenues, and gaps in knowledge, where urgent investment is needed.


Our Delivering the Dementia Moonshot report outlines six steps government must take to help us deliver on the ambition of finding a life-changing treatment for dementia. These are:

  • Find ways to detect the diseases that cause dementia 10-15 years earlier, to broaden the search for new treatments and intervene with those most at risk of developing dementia.
  • Find ways to more effectively validate novel targets in early drug development to maximise chances of successful clinical trials.
  • Make the UK the best place to conduct clinical dementia research.
  • Expand research infrastructure to maintain the UK’s position as a world leader in dementia research.
  • Further our understanding of dementia risk reduction and prevention.
  • Develop robust prevalence data for dementia to further our knowledge of the impact of the condition across our society.


Government investment in research into other diseases, such as cancer and HIV, has delivered transformative change for people living with those conditions. We want to see the same for people affected by dementia.
