COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Update: 11 August

On Friday last week we published our provisional COVID-19 Framework, describing how parkrun events are likely to return where there remains an underlying level of the virus.

We intentionally published the Framework in advance of it being appropriate to open any of the 21 parkrun countries that remain closed, to enable us to progress conversations with partners and stakeholders around the world, and to open it up to feedback and questions from the entire parkrun family.

It has been received incredibly positively, which we are pleased about, and we’ve been truly humbled by everyone’s support for reopening our events as soon as it is safe to do so. We’re also grateful for the detailed feedback sent in from around the world, and will further develop the Framework over time.

If you’re yet to read the Framework you can access it here on our Volunteer Hub, and I would also encourage you to listen to our discussion on the 7 August episode of the Free Weekly Timed podcast, where Vassos Alexander and I talk in-depth about the details behind our decision-making process.

Over the course of this week we will also be developing a comprehensive Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section to add to the Framework, which we will be publishing this Friday, alongside a further discussion on the next episode of Free Weekly Timed.

Finally, as our understanding of the COVID-19 pandemic develops, we’re becoming more confident that outdoor environments present a low risk of infection, particularly in comparison to indoor environments. This topic is critical for us to understand, and will significantly inform future decisions as to the safety of reopening parkrun events.

We’re excited to announce therefore that we have commissioned Professor Mike Weed (Professor of Applied Policy Sciences, Canterbury Christ Church University) to lead on a review of the current evidence relating to transmission of COVID-19 in outdoor environments.

Thanks, as always, for your support.

We are getting through this together,

Restarting in England

An update on our planned restart in England from parkrun Global Chief Executive Officer Nick Pearson.   Sadly, after significant consultation and discussion, circumstances outside of our control have dictated that parkrun cannot return in England by the end of October, as we had hoped. We know that many people will be disappointed to hear…
