We are delighted to confirm that, as announced on local channels last Friday, parkrun is set to return in the Falkland Islands (Cape Pembroke Lighthouse parkrun) and in Australia’s Northern Territory on Saturday 19 September.
As we confirmed in last week’s update, there are clear and specific local guidelines that permit us to return in these locations, and we continue to look at ways in which we can reopen sub-nationally in other places.
In further positive news, yesterday, in the UK, we announced our intention for parkrun to return in England by the end of October. This announcement was the culmination of months of hard work, liaising directly with the UK government, Public Health England and government agencies. We have now reached a point where we all agree that the significant public health benefit of parkrun returning outweighs the very low risk of increased Coronavirus transmission.
We try to publish as much detail as possible behind the decision we make, so if you would like to find out more:
We’ve been overwhelmed and humbled by the positive response since the announcement was made. There is clear excitement around parkrun’s return and we have been inundated with positive messages of gratitude and support. Thank you.
We also know that many volunteer teams will have questions and we are preparing a programme of measures to support event teams and ambassadors over the coming weeks.
Unfortunately we were not able to confirm in yesterday’s announcement that parkrun could return in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This is simply because government restrictions in those countries currently don’t permit parkrun events to take place. However, should guidance change, it is entirely possible for the other Home Nations of the UK to return within the end of October time frame.
Lastly, we remain committed to reopening parkrun in as many territories as possible as soon as it is safe, and where we have the relevant permissions in place to do so. This news represents a significant step forward for parkrun, not just in England but across the world.
We’re another step closer to returning.
