As part of our plans to restart parkrun and junior parkrun across England, we are publishing a UK-specific update every Friday to keep ambassadors, event teams, parkrun communities, and landowners informed on the progress we are making towards events restarting.
The situation in England is increasingly positive and we are still on track with our previously communicated intention to return junior parkrun from 11 April onwards and 5k events on 5 June.
Having written, on Monday 1 March, to all 289 junior event teams asking if they would like to return in April, we’ve now heard back from 225 events. 92% of these events have confirmed that they would either like to (85%) or maybe (7%) return from 11 April onwards. We are now working closely with these teams to get everything in place, including landowner permission, to confirm their restart dates.
And in really positive news, we’re already starting to receive enthusiastic and encouraging responses from landowners, with permissions granted for some events to return on Sunday 11 April.
As we said last week, whilst it’s not compulsory for junior parkrun events to return on 11 April, for those that do want to we will need to have completed all of the required tasks related to reopening no later than Thursday 25 March. Where we are not in possession of landowner permission by that date, the next available start date for an event will be Sunday 18 April, and so on, on a rolling week-by-week basis.
We will do everything we can in order to support all junior parkrun teams who wish to return on 11 April. We really do need teams to respond to our emails as soon as possible, helping us to progress things in time to hit our Thursday 25 March deadline.
For the moment, we are asking that event teams do not contact their landowners regarding permission to return. If your landowner contacts you directly please ask them to wait to hear from us or get in touch with us if you have any questions on this subject.
We will manage this process centrally, as we are with junior parkrun, and requests will be supported by significant documentation.
This is a good time for Event Directors to check in on their core team, but there is nothing else 5k event teams in England need to do at this stage.
We will be in touch with teams regarding the reopening process soon.
Elsewhere in the UK, whilst there isn’t any change in the situation in Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales yet which would allow us to target a return date, we are continuing to talk with the relevant authorities and ambassadors, and remain optimistic of some positive news soon.
Thanks for your continued support.
