As part of our plans to restart parkrun and junior parkrun across England, we are publishing a UK-specific update every Friday to keep ambassadors, event teams, parkrun communities, and landowners informed on the progress we are making towards events restarting.
The situation is increasingly positive and we are still on track to have some of our junior parkruns in England up and running from 11 April onwards, and 5k events in England on 5 June. And in a positive development this week, we are now able to start work on returning junior parkrun events in Wales.
Earlier this week we were delighted to receive confirmation that junior parkrun events in Wales should be able to resume soon and we have begun working towards that.
We have now heard back from 251 out of 289 junior parkrun event teams in England. And encouragingly, we’re seeing an incredibly positive response from landowners, many of whom have already given the relevant permissions required for us to resume from 11 April.
Whilst it’s not compulsory for junior parkrun events to return on 11 April, time is tight for those that do want to. As a reminder, we will need to have completed all of the required tasks related to reopening no later than Thursday 25 March. Where we are not in possession of landowner permission by that date, the next available start date for an event will be Sunday 18 April, and so on, on a rolling week-by-week basis.
Operationally, the focus for now is very much on the return of junior parkrun.
This is a good time for Event Directors to check in on their core team, but there is nothing else 5k event teams in England need to do at this stage and we will be in touch with teams regarding the reopening process soon.
For the moment, we are asking event teams not to contact their landowners regarding permission to return. If a landowner contacts your event directly please ask them to wait to hear from us or get in touch with us if you have any questions on this subject.
We will manage this process centrally when the time is right, as we are with junior parkrun, and requests will be supported by significant documentation.
Overall, the picture continues to look increasingly optimistic across the UK. Whilst we don’t yet have clarity on when we can return in Scotland and Northern Ireland, or when 5k can return in Wales, we are continuing conversations with our stakeholders and hope to have more positive news soon.
