As we move through the reopening process for parkrun and junior parkrun, we’re publishing a UK-specific update every Friday to keep ambassadors, event teams, parkrun communities, and landowners informed on our progress.
Saturday’s reopening in England went incredibly well, with around 500 events restarting, taking the total of walkers, joggers and runners in the UK to almost 100,000, supported by 13,000 volunteers. Overall walk/run attendance per event was down 11% on the equivalent Saturday in 2019, and the volunteer attendance was up 14% and, importantly, we didn’t see any huge attendances, with no single event exceeding their biggest attendance recorded in the 12 months prior to closure.
As with 5k events, the large majority of junior parkruns in England have now reopened, and 11-14s can once again record a finish time.
We do still have some junior and 5k events without reopening dates, and we are working hard to ensure no one is forgotten and every parkrun community returns as soon as possible.
Almost all junior and 5k events in Northern Ireland have now returned, however please do check the status of any event via their website and social media pages before travelling.
We are pleased to say that, pending confirmation (expected on Tuesday next week) of the Scottish Government’s intended move to Beyond Level 0, 5k events in Scotland will begin to return from Saturday 14 August.
At the time of writing, we have landowner permission for around 50% of Scottish 5k parkrun events and we are also confident that this percentage will increase over the coming week. Thanks to insight gained following the reopening in England at the weekend, we are comfortable therefore that events will not be overwhelmed by significantly-increased attendances.
All junior parkrun events in Scotland are technically able to return as they fall within the participant limits for Level 0. A number have already reopened, and we continue to work with landowners, events teams, and ambassadors to open all events as soon as possible. With 5k events closed, children aged 11-14 are unable to record a time at the moment but this will change the first Sunday following the first Saturday that 5k events return.
Whilst we remain confident that our 5k events could return, within the guidelines set out by the Welsh Government, from Saturday 14 August, we don’t yet have a level of landowner permission that gives us confidence to return, and we are therefore delaying the return of 5k parkrun events in Wales until at least Saturday 21 August.
We know that landowners are doing their best to process applications as fast as possible, and the time of year means that many people are on annual leave. As such it may be that some events take longer to return than others.
We will continue to work with landowners, event teams and ambassadors, and hope to be able to make a more positive announcement this time next week.
All junior parkrun events in Wales are technically able to return as they can operate within guidelines set out by the Welsh Government. A number have already reopened, and we continue to work with landowners, events teams, and ambassadors to open all other events as soon as possible. With 5k events closed, children aged 11-14 are currently unable to record a time at a junior parkrun but this will change the first Sunday following the first Saturday that 5k events return.
To check the status of your parkrun event, or to get involved as a volunteer, please do visit local event pages on the website, and their associated social media channels.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
