Black Girls RUN in Durham!

On October 1, 2016, Durham, NC parkrun was proud to host a couch-to-5k graduation event with the local chapter of Black Girls RUN! (BGR) on their 167th event.

The group’s tongue-in-cheek shirts claim that they run to “preserve the sexy”, but BGR also has a more serious mission: to promote running as a way to combat the chronic illnesses that disproportionately affect black women. BGR has running groups at all levels, and it’s their novice runners who seem to get the most from our parkrun community.

This month’s event saw more than 20 women cross the finish line and take another step closer to meeting old goals while already starting to set new ones. As always, the regulars stayed put till the last runner had crossed the line, cheering on everyone and grabbing their cameras to capture the moment when all of the graduates joined the final finisher for her last 20 meters.

Durham, NC parkrun looks forward to continuing to run with BGR and all runners and would-be runners in our community. Here’s to the simple but profound joy of putting one foot in front of the other!
