Our parkrun week in pictures, November 9th 2019

banner

In this week’s roundup of our favorite pictures and stories we find some enjoying the best of fall, others making the most of what Mother Nature sends them, and others finding rather creative solutions. Some are crazy fast, and some savor every step of the way. If you’re feeling that it’s a long road to earning that milestone shirt, you’ll be encouraged by the person who has taken longer than anybody else on the continent. Enjoy!

1

Roosevelt Island in central Washington DC is a magical spot for photography at the peak of fall. Photographer Marc Castellano was exploring the island with his camera when he came across a stream of parkrunners circling the island and the boardwalk. So he made them an album of beautiful pictures.

2

At College Park parkrun mayor Patrick Wojahn (84 parkruns) congratulated Duane Rosenberg, mayor of neighboring town New Carrollton on joining the parkrun 100 club.

3

We’re fairly certain that no parkrunner has savored the path to 50 parkruns for as long as Heather. She first visited Livonia parkrun in Michigan in May 2014, one week after Livonia lost its mantle of only parkrun on the continent. By the time she was halfway to 50 there were 3 parkruns on the continent. Now there are over 40 every week in the US, and almost as many across the border in Canada.

“When we adopted French Fry a year and a half ago, he was skin and bones. At that point, he couldn’t even walk in a straight line, much less run a 5k. He has had a fantastic year.” — Karl

This week at Leakin Park parkrun in Baltimore barkrunner French Fry was the first finisher!

5

Kensington, MD and Portland, OR both have a parkrun that takes place on the Rock Creek Trail. Both of them saw a big new attendance record this week. This is the start of Rock Creek Trail parkrun in Portland.

6

Kensington parkrun in Maryland saw a big attendance record this week as they welcomed a crew from Hope Connections for Cancer. This local group typically joins a local paid 5K race. This year they found that parkrun was a perfect fit. And they brought along hot cocoa too!

7

Greetings from the record-sized crowd at South Boulder Creek parkrun in Colorado.

8

Much of the route of Weedon Island Preserve parkrun in St Petersburg is made up of these boardwalks. Amazing place to be a parkwalker. Why hurry!

9

Winter is coming.

But that’s fine if you can do an indoor pre-parkrun briefing like at McAllister parkrun in Lafayette, IN.

10

Whoa, that’s a pretty fancy spot for a pre-parkrun briefing, Howard Temin Lakeshore Path parkrun! In Madison, WI.

11

Not exactly indoors, but the little extra shelter helped for the pre-parkrun briefing at Renton parkrun in Washington State.

12

The trail through the woods at Rec Plex North parkrun in Pensacola, FL is a labor of love for the volunteers who literally cleared the trail for the parkrun and the University of West Florida. The team recently unveiled a new section of trail that avoids a rough section. Nice job, guys!

13

Last week Sergey found himself in Chicago, where he planned to drive to nearby(ish) Heritage Harbor Ottawa parkrun. When he learned that the event was canceled due to flooding he adjusted plans and set out in the night to drive to Joe Creason parkrun in Louisville, KY. … So coming out in the rain at his home parkrun, Perrigo parkrun in Redmond, WA, was really no biggie.

14

22 degrees at start time — no problem for these volunteers at Charleston WV parkrun.

15

At Heritage Harbor Ottawa parkrun in Illinois they were happy to be back after flooding at the harbor. This week they had help from a crew from OSF Healthcare.

16

Cory normally does her parkrunning at Roosevelt Island parkrun in Washington DC. But she decided to visit all of the DC-area parkruns by running there. This week, as a birthday challenge, she set out early to run the 12 miles to College Park parkrun in Maryland. Happy birthday, Cory!

17

When you ask a random parkrunner to take your picture at Crissy Field parkrun … and it turns out to be Natalia, who’s the comms guru for all of parkrun Russia.

18

Natalia was one of many parkrunners who last week were warming up for the NYC Marathon at an east coast parkrun, and who we found at parkruns all across the country this week. Hope you enjoyed your tour of US parkruns, Natalia! Crissy Field parkrun

Your roundup editor was surprised to come across the story of how Karin and Daniel had driven from California to Himmel parkrun in Tucson, AZ. It was just a few weeks ago that this editor met Karin at her home base of Hasenheide parkrun – Berlin in Germany.

20

Some people choose cool places to visit, and then look to see if there’s a parkrun there. Discerning parkrunners start by choosing a parkrun and then look to see what else the town has to offer. Joyce loved her visit to Lillie parkrun Ann Arbor, where she stumbled on snow flurries and an unexpected attendance record. … And then she discovered that Ann Arbor, MI is a pretty cool place in other ways.

21

Zoom! Impressive course record at Oak Grove parkrun in Kentucky by Kiera Woodman. In fact, Kiera’s 17:47 time put her in the fastest 10 female times of the quarter million parkruns completed worldwide this weekend!

22

Veterans day parkwalk at Mansfield OH parkrun.

23

James recently moved from the UK to the Cleveland, OH area. Great timing for the rapid growth of parkrun in Ohio, so that he doesn’t have to abandon his pursuit of a 250 shirt. James set a PB this week at Ohio and Erie Canal Reservation parkrun.

24

As he neared the finish of a rain-soaked Perrigo parkrun in Redmond, WA first-timer Edward was bemused by the celebrations that greeted him. Congratulations, Edward, you are the 1,000th finisher at Perrigo parkrun.

25

The kids from Woodcreek Elementary Run Club loved their visit to Livonia parkrun this week.

26

At Mountain Goat Trail parkrun in Sewanee, TN Art joined for his first parkrun, and he’s already looking to volunteer. Art, you are a star!

27

At Oak Grove parkrun in Kentucky Kendel, her brother Devon, and her mom Dorothy ALL set age-group records on their first ever parkrun. Awesome! And dad Corey — you did great, too!

28

Great way to start the weekend with the family at Clermont parkrun in Florida.

29

Brilliant new marketing strategy at Fletcher’s Cove parkrun in Washington DC.

They know that it’s the barkrunners who really are the influencers in getting the family outdoors on a Saturday morning.

30

At Howard Temin Lakeshore Path parkrun in Madison, WI Christina and Forrest enjoyed their roles as turnaround marshals.

31

Rec Plex North parkrun teamed up with Team RWB for a special parkrun highlighting connections between veterans and the Pensacola, FL community.

32

Donut menu, or volunteer sign-up board at Crissy Field parkrun in San Francisco?

Your guess is as good as ours.

33

Ready for the start of Bear Creek Greenbelt parkrun #3 in Keller, TX.
