Austen, my 7-year-old son who is one of identical twins, recently ran his tenth parkrun. I surprised him by arranging to get the certificate and at school assembly the principal awarded it to him – much to his brother’s chagrin and the other pupils’ admiration.
So now the race is on (first for Gabriel’s 10th) and then both are targeting 50 parkruns. They insist on running separately (too much competition otherwise) so I have to alternate weekly who goes to parkrun!
Since I was little, I always ran but never had any formal training. Once I left school, there was no running in my radar so when I heard about this thing called parkrun, I had to check it out. In 2014, I ran a few, 2015 a few more but that was it. I love animals and had been looking for a dog. My beautiful Great Dane showed up one day and I fell in love. Despite my lack of Saturday long runs, I still managed to obtain a sub 09:00 finish.

I’m now the Event Director for Greenstone Hill parkrun and training hard for a silver medal at this years Comrades marathon. I have met so many people, it is a blessing and to think that it all started at parkrun.
