A regular at Fish Hoek parkrun, Basil Murray (above left) has completed 71 parkruns, and entered the Covid lockdown just one short of the milestone of 25 different volunteering occasions.

Basil has volunteered on a regular base as scribe, marshal, handing out finish tokens, being tail walker and finish token support. Not even a broken arm could persuade him to stay home on a Saturday morning. With his bandaged broken arm, he brought a little camping chair and volunteered as a marshal.

Basil turned 90 this week, and everybody at Fish Hoek parkrun wishes him a very happy birthday and many more happy years to come.

When Basil reached his 50 parkrun milestone at Fish Hoek parkrun, he said: “It is our attitude and not our years that define our age….”! Now Basil has reached his personal milestone: 90 Years and still very young at heart!

On the morning of his 50th parkrun on 20 April 2019, it was also the day of the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon, which takes the marathon runners past our parkrun route. Basil arrived at parkrun on his scooter and first cheered on the marathon runners, before doing his 50th parkrun.

With nine decades of memories, and a lifetime of experience. We are so privileged to have you at Fish Hoek parkrun, and are very sad that we cannot celebrate your birthday with you on Saturday. We will have to do that, once we are allowed to have our weekly parkruns again. In the meantime, all of us at Fish Hoek parkrun wish you a birthday full of joy and happiness, surrounded by family and friends. Stay as you are! You are an encouragement and inspiration to many of us.

Speaking to Basil on the morning of his birthday, he said he misses parkrun a lot and cannot wait for it to start again. He follows us on Facebook in the meantime and appreciates the social aspect of our weekly posts.

Basil, we cannot wait to meet up for our first parkrun after lockdown again.

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) update 19 January

On Saturday we welcomed parkrun events back across the Australian state of Victoria, in a wonderful celebration of all that we love about parkrun. In 2020 people there experienced a long and incredibly restrictive lockdown, which must have been doubly challenging as other Australian states reopened and returned to normal life.   Throughout those incredibly…
