Last night, the Government announced that South Africa would move to Adjusted Alert Level 1, and with that they increased outdoor gathering limits from a maximum of 500 people to a maximum of 2,000. This is great news for parkrun South Africa, and allows us to work toward the reopening of all our events.
Around 30 events have already opened due to them being relatively small and remote, and another 78 were recently given the opportunity to reopen from Saturday 9 October as we felt they would comfortably sit within the 500 person gathering limit. All those events should either continue operating or continue working toward their reopening dates from 9 October onward.
Having considered our likely attendances going forward, and in the context of the attendances at reopened events around the world, we are today pleased to confirm that the remaining 100 events can start to return from Saturday 30 October.
Today we have written to all event teams across the country, and will be supporting their efforts to reopen. Please note however that not all events will be in a position to return straight away, so please do keep an eye on their social media pages and event websites for the most up-to-date information.
Thanks for your support and patience over the last 18 months, it’s been an incredibly challenging time for everyone, however there is now clear light at the end of the tunnel and we look forward to once again walking, jogging, running, and volunteering in parks and open spaces across South Africa.
