This Freedom Day, why not join your local parkrun to run, jog, walk or volunteer?
You may think that parkrun is just for Saturday mornings, but each parkrun country around the world is able to host one additional event on a day of their choice. And the best part? When this day falls on any day of the week other than Saturday, we get an extra parkrun day!
In South Africa, we have changed our additional parkrun day from Christmas Day and now have Freedom Day as a day to bring our parkrun communities together. Freedom Day is the commemoration of the first democratic elections held in South Africa on 27 April 1994. These were the first post-apartheid national elections to be held in South African where anyone over 18 years old could vote regardless of race.
As Nelson Mandela said on the first anniversary of Freedom Day, “Wherever South Africans are across the globe, our hearts beat as one, as we renew our common loyalty to our country and our commitment to its future.”
What better day than 27 April to bring our communities together?
In previous years some parkrunners have taken the opportunity of the public holiday on Freedom Day to complete freedom parkruns. These allow you to complete a parkrun course and record the time on your parkrun profile. With the additional parkrun day now taking place, you will be able to receive an official parkrun time or volunteer credit towards your next milestone!
The additional parkrun is put on at the discretion of local event teams. To see if your local parkrun has a Freedom Day parkrun, please check the compendium. If your local parkrun is taking place it will start at the usual time.
